Take, for example, the case of preschools in Boulder, Colorado. When I looked at the local search results, I found that the top two spots were occupied by sites that had embraced Google Business Photos. As the Moz blog noted, this feature can help businesses overcome deficits in areas like Google reviews, star ratings, and even domain authority.

The first-ranked site, Mountain View Preschool, had a domain authority of just 14 and a page authority of 23, but it boasted Google Business Photos. The second-ranked site, Sunflower Preschool, had a slightly higher domain authority of 21 and a page authority of 31, as well as a single Google review. Interestingly, both sites had domain names that were around 10 years old.

The Importance of Adapting to New Technologies

This got me thinking – maybe site age and domain authority aren’t the be-all and end-all when it comes to search engine rankings. Perhaps the key is being willing to adapt to new technologies and features that Google rolls out, like Google Business Photos.

To test this theory, I expanded my research to include other industries, such as transmission repair shops in the Broomfield, Greeley, and Fort Collins areas of Colorado. Again, I found that the top-ranked sites tended to have Google Business Photos, even if their domain authority and age weren’t necessarily the highest.

As the Browser Media blog noted, domain authority isn’t the be-all and end-all of SEO anymore. Sure, it’s still important, but there are other factors at play, like user experience, technical optimization, and the willingness to embrace new tools and features.

The Liquor Store Conundrum

To further solidify my findings, I looked at the local search results for liquor stores in Boulder, Colorado. Here, the picture was a bit more mixed. The top-ranked site did have Google Business Photos, but it also had a higher domain authority and more Google reviews than its competitors.

As the Moz community discussion on domain age and authority revealed, these factors can still play a significant role in search engine rankings, especially in more competitive industries.

The Takeaway: Embrace Innovation, But Don’t Ignore the Basics

So, what’s the takeaway here? Well, it seems that while site age and domain authority are still important factors in search engine rankings, they aren’t the only things that matter. Businesses need to be willing to adapt to new technologies and features, like Google Business Photos, in order to stay ahead of the curve.

At the same time, they can’t neglect the fundamentals of SEO, like technical optimization, content quality, and building a strong backlink profile. It’s a delicate balance, but one that can pay off in a big way when it comes to improving your search engine visibility and driving more customers to your door.
